Yes! Before beginning driving lessons, whether it's a part of the Complete Driver's Ed Course or just the Three 2-Hour Driving Lessons without the Classroom Session, students must pass the written test at the Missouri Highway Patrol Exam Station and be issued a State Instruction Permit before they can get behind the wheel. Applicants must be at least 15 years old, pass vision, sign, and written tests, and have a parent/guardian present. Students may not schedule a driving lesson until they have obtained their State Permit.
Although there is no specific requirement, we highly recommend students have at least a few hours behind the wheel just to be familiar with general vehicle operation. That can be as simple as practice driving in a parking lot using the accelerator and brake, making turns, and watching out for other vehicles. Doing so can go a long way to a student getting the most out of their first Driving Lesson with us.
To qualify for a Restricted License at the age of 16, the student must have logged at least 40 hours of practice driving, including a minimum of 10 hours of nighttime driving, instruction between sunset and sunrise. with a qualified person or grandparent in the vehicle.
Also, you must have obtained and held a State Instruction Permit for at least 182 days (beginning the day after issuance), and you may not have any alcohol-related offenses in the last 12 months and no traffic convictions in the last 6 months.
